Natalie M. Mara

1936-2014 PITTSFIELD Natalie M. Mara, 77, of Pittsfield, died Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Berkshire Medical Center. Born on December 24, 1936, the daughter of John A. and Anna M. Pellisier Mara, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1954 and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College in 1967, her Master of Science degree in Community Health Nursing from the University of Colorado in 1970, and her Certificate as Nurse Practitioner from the University of Massachusetts in 1979. From 1958 through 1967, she was a member of the Sisters of Providence in Holyoke known as Sister Mary Justina. She worked as a nurse and nurse practitioner for more than 40 years in a variety of settings including Frontier Nursing Service of Kentucky, Visiting Nurse Association of Pittsfield, Family Health Center at Hillcrest Hospital, and the South County Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association. Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and continued to provide care and comfort to people as a Hospice volunteer for more than 10 years. She is survived by her sister, Margaret T. MacDowell, of Pittsfield; her brother, Charles A. Mara, of East Greenbush, N.Y; her sister, Nanette Vuillemot and her husband, Don, of Fort Worth, Texas; 19 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Her sister, Elizabeth A. Sheltry, and her brother, John C. Mara, predeceased her. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Natalie M. Mara will be held Thursday, August 14, at 10:15 a.m., from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by Rev. James K. Joyce, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
