Obituary Condolences

Paulyne S. Gerry

1920-2012 SHELBURNE FALLS On Tuesday, November 20, 2012 Paulyne Gerry went to join her husband, Harper, in the House of Our Lord.

Born March 3, 1920 at 3 a.m. to Joseph and Catherine (Sczepanik) Galise in South Deerfield, Mass., Paulyne began her long life of serving others. She worked for a town doctor until graduating from Deerfield High School in 1939. She continued her education at the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as an RN in 1942. Paulyne married Harper Thompson Gerry in 1946 when he returned home from the war and so began her family life and service to the community of Shelburne Falls. She volunteered to organize well-child clinics for infants through kindergarten age from 1950-57 with attending pediatricians from Greenfield. She became a private duty nurse for many years at the Farren Memorial and Franklin County Hospitals. In 1964 Paulyne also set up the state mandated immunization clinic for D.P.T. and oral polio vaccines. After Paulyne's husband, Harper, helped establish the Buckland-Shelburne Community Center, Inc. in 1974, she loved serving the community as program coordinator there until 2005 when she was stricken with a debilitating disease while at the farm in Maine.

Beside serving others, Paulyne loved "summering" in Maine, growing beautiful flowers gardens and canning the bountiful vegetables grown by Harper. She loved sharing the harvest with her family, as well as cooking for them. Paulyne was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Shelburne Falls Girls Club (1947-1987) serving as president for several years, the Shelburne Falls Historical Society, the Wellington, Maine Historical Society, and the Grange.

Survivors include a son, Harper T. Gerry Jr. and wife Terri of Tolland, Conn., daughter, Rebecca Gerry Knox and husband Michael of Pittsfield, Mass., son, Kevin Gerry and wife Deborah of Northfield, Mass.; two beloved grandchildren, Christopher M. Knox of Pittsfield and Ashley R. Gerry of San Francisco, Fla., a brother Leonard Galisa and wife Aldine of South Deerfield, and many nieces and nephews.

Paulyne was preceded in death by her husband Harper; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Mary Galisa, formerly of Stockbridge, and brother Frederick Galisa.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 34 Monroe Ave., Shelburne Falls with Rev. Tony Cullen, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Arms Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the SMITH-KELLEHER FUNERAL HOME, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested memorial contributions be made to Mary Lyon Education Fund for the Harper Gerry Student Assistance Fund. To leave a message of condolence to Paulyne's family, lease visit www.smithkelleherfuneralhome.com
