Peter Scott Simmons, Sr.

1943 - 2013 LEE Peter Scott Simmons, Sr., 69, of Greylock Street, formerly of Theresa Terrace and Tyringham Road in Lee, passed away Thursday, March 7, at BMC in Pittsfield, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Sept. 7, 1943, in Pittsfield, the son of George and Dorothy Cheney Simmons, he grew up on and would eventually own Cone Farm, once his family's working dairy farm. He was educated in Lee schools, graduating in 1961 from Lee High School. During his high school years, Pete worked for Alter Brothers Garage. He continued his education at Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield .

He joined the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War.

Pete worked for Mead Corp. as Mill Superintendent at the Laurel Mill in South Lee and also as their Quality Improvement Employee Development Coordinator, retiring after 31 years of committed service. In the 1990's, he worked as a consultant for Mead and Sheffield Plastics. By the late 1990's, Pete would transition to his "Retirement Job" with Bill's Pharmacy in Great Barrington, a job he enjoyed very much.

Pete was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and the former St. George's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Lee Chamber of Commerce, the Lee Kiwanis, and the Lee CDC. He worked with the United Way, and was an NRA Endowment member. The gathering of the "Crazy Eights" brought tremendous joy to Pete's life. He was an avid train enthusiast and loved writing poems and letters to friends and family.

Pete leaves his wife, the former MaryAnn Coles, whom he married on July 10, 1965, at St. Mary's Church in Lee; one daughter, Kelly Simmons DeVarennes and her companion, Charles Hebler of Lee; two sons, Peter S. Simmons Jr. of Lee and Craig M. Simmons and his wife, Dawn, also of Lee; one brother David B. Simmons and his wife, Lynn, of Lee; a sister-in-law, Sandra Dunn and her husband, David of Lee; five grandchildren, Jed, Alex, Molly, Keegan, and Haley; one step-grandson, Josh, and many extended family and friends along with his three cats, Maggie, Scooby and Scarlet.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral service celebrating Peter's life will be held Tuesday, March 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday, March 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the KELLY FUNERAL HOME.
