Ralph E. Chase

1925-2014 PITTSFIELD Ralph Edmund Chase, 89, of Capitol Square Apartments, Pittsfield, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the Samuel S. Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Albany. Born in Pittsfield on April 24, 1925, the son of Fred O. and Marion Raine Chase, he was a graduate of Dalton High School and had attended college. A World War II veteran, Mr. Chase enlisted with the United States Army on June 17, 1943. He served with its Air Corps component where he piloted twin engine planes. He was honorably discharged on November 3, 1945. Mr. Chase was a forester and worked in his family-owned business, "Firewood Factory", and had an antique business in New Lebanon, as well. He had, at one time, worked as a trouble-shooter for the Department of Public Welfare. Mr. Chase enjoyed playing chess, and in his younger years, was a three-time New England chess champion. He was a New England sports fan who also enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and going to tag sales. Mr. Chase is survived by his son, Stephen C. Chase, of Adams; his granddaughter, Dailene Surbaugh; his companion and caregiver, Linda Astore; and many good friends. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Mr. Chase, there are no services. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that contributions be made to the family to assist them with final expenses. The DERY FUNERAL HOME is In charge of arrangements.
