Deacon Ralph R. Cyr 1934-2012 PITTSFIELD Deacon Ralph R. Cyr, 77, passed away on January 10, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a brief but valiant battle with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor. He was born October 30, 1934 son of the late Denis R. and Hazel M. (Rilla) Cyr. Educated in schools in Pittsfield and Taunton, Mass., Deacon Cyr was a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph High School where he participated in Football and Baseball. He continued his studies at RCA Institutes, New York, N.Y., graduating in 1954 with a Certificate in Radio and Television Broadcasting. A member of the United States Army Reserve from 1955-61 serving, active reserve duty in 1957. Deacon Cyr had a long career at General Electric Ordnance Department in Pittsfield beginning in 1956 until his retirement in 1991. Following his retirement from G.E. he worked in the Pastoral Care Department at BMC and also at the UPS Store retiring in 2010. He entered his studies for the Permanent Diaconate program in the Diocese of Springfield in 1989 and was ordained May 29, 1993 at St. Michael's Cathedral, Springfield, MA. by the late Bishop John A. Marshall. His assignments include Notre Dame Parish and Holy Family Parish both in Pittsfield until their closing. He then assisted at Sacred Heart Parish, Pittsfield, of which he was a member. Deacon Cyr lived a life of service to others. Among his activities he served on Boards of all of the Pittsfield Catholic Schools, the first person in charge of Bingo at St. Joseph High School where he was the recipient in 1980 of the Volunteer of the Year Award, Deanery delegate to the Catholic Youth Center where he also volunteered at many events, volunteered at BMC in the Pastoral Care department and was a recipient of the Jack Fickling Volunteer Award. He also was active in the Minor League of Pittsfield Baseball League in the 1960's. The Cyrs also served in Jail ministry at the Berkshire County House of Correction in the REC Program and as Adult Advisors for the Teen Encounter Program in the Diocese of Springfield from 1982-90. Among his greatest joys was visiting the sick in nursing homes, but, by far his greatest enjoyment was together with his wife Jane he could be seen present at all of the sporting and extracurricular activities of his grandchildren, He was one of their biggest fans and encouraged them to enjoy what they were doing. He leaves to cherish his memory his best friend and high school sweetheart of nearly 60 years Jane E. (Gleason) Cyr who he met at St. Joseph High in 1952. They were married April 12, 1958; his beloved daughter Patricia E. of Pittsfield; cherished grandchildren Russell M. (Lacey) Cyr of Florida, Mass., Derek R. Cyr, Alexsandra J. and Daniel M. Molleur all of Pittsfield. He was great grandfather to Cameron D. and Evan M. Cyr of Pittsfield, and Denis R. Cyr of Florida Mass. He was predeceased by a son Denis R. Cyr, who died April 7, 1999. Also predeceased by his sisters, Geri A. (Cyr) Trapp of Cincinnati, Ohio and her husband John, and Claire L. (Cyr) Smith of Pittsfield; and his brother-in-law Donald J. Gleason of Pittsfield. A gentle, kind, loving and compassionate man he served God, his Church, and all who were fortunate to know him. His greatest love was for his family. Ralph also leaves behind many relatives and friends who will mourn his loss including his brother-in-law, James J. Smith of Pittsfield. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Deacon Ralph R. Cyr will be Monday January 16, 2012 at 10 a.m. from the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by his longtime friend he met through Teen Encounter, that he thought of as another son, Rev. Michael F. Bernier, Pastor of Mary Mother of Hope Parish, Springfield, MA. Bishop Timothy A. McDonnell, Bishop of diocess of Springfield will preside. The Liturgy will be concelebrated by longtime friend, Rev. James K Joyce, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church and other local clergy. Several priests and Deacons will also be present. The members of the Class of 1993 in the Diaconate will serve as honorary pall bearers. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday, January 15, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to either the Claire L. Smith Pregnancy Support Scholarship named for his late sister, or the Donald J. Gleason Scholarship given to graduating high school seniors named in honor of his late brother-in-law, care of the Dwyer Funeral Home in his memory.
