Obituary Condolences

Randolph Clayton Paul

1917-2013 SOUTH PORTLAND Randolph "Randy" Paul, resident of South Portland, Maine, died October 27, 2013 at age 96 from complications of heart failure. He was born April 26, 1917 to Hiram Joel Paul and Agnes Frances (Berry) Paul, in Conway, New Hampshire at the home of his grandfather Seth Berry. He attended Kennet High School in North Conway, but graduated from Cornish High School in 1936, then served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Paul worked 40 years as a watchmaker and jeweler. He owned Randolph Paul Jewelers near the Opera House in Lenox, Massachusetts. Randy said that Lenox is an upper-class town, summer home of the Boston Symphony at "Tanglewood" with mansions built on European standards with European materials and Italian carvers. People would come in the Summer and bring him their "hand made/custom made" watches watches that were actually tooled individually by craftsmen in Europe, watches with many "jewels" to be cleaned and/or repaired. People would bring their watches and jewelry to him for cleaning and repair, knowing their valuable items were in the best of care. With vitality and wide-ranging interests, this avid sailing enthusiast and pilot was always learning something new. He was undaunted by modern technology and used both his laptop and i-phone for internet activity. His eyes would twinkle as he cheerfully stated that he was having too much fun to think about end-of-life issues. He recently constructed storm-shielding for his entryway, and a trailer to pull behind his car. He grew his own garden vegetables, distilled his water, and baked his own nutritious spelt-based breads. He exercised both his mind and his body, stating that even though he may not feel like doing it, he always felt better after exercising. A devoted believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, Randy attended church regularly until his hearing loss made it too difficult in recent years. While three siblings died in childhood, Randy was recently predeceased by his only brother Richard Paul of Kennebunkport, Maine. His first wife Helen (Smith) Paul died in 1988. He is survived by his wife of almost 25 years Phyllis (Oakes) Paul, sons Ronald J. Paul of Springfield, Massachusetts, and Lawrence "Bing" R. Paul of East Haven, Connecticut, step-daughter Donna Bruguglio of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, step-son Paul A. Lisi of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. An inspiration and mentor, Randy Paul will be greatly missed by all. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside service will be held 2:00pm on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the Highland Memorial Cemetery, Highland Avenue, South Portland, Maine. The family requests that donations in Randy Paul's memory be sent in lieu of flowers to Meals on Wheels c/o Southern Maine Agency on Aging, 136 US Route 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
