Obituary

Red Lane, a country music singer-songwriter who penned the Tammy Wynette hit "'Til I Get It Right," has died of cancer, according to multiple news sources. Lane, who died July 2, was 76.

Lane, who was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1993, wrote songs for many of country's biggest stars: Wynette, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and many others.

His song credits include 1978's "Come See Me and Come Lonely," which Dottie West recorded; "The Eagle," which he co-wrote with Mack Vickery and Hank Cochran; and "Miss Emily's Picture," which was recorded by the country singer John Conlee.

Born Hollis Rudolph DeLaughter Feb. 2, 1939, Lane launched his music career after high school and after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He later signed with RCA. Lane scored his only Top 40 country hit, "The World Needs a Melody." But he was known better as a songwriter for other artists.

Lane's hobby as a parachute jumper provided the inspiration for the song "(The Day I Jumped) From Uncle Harvey's Plane," which the country artist Roger Miller recorded. Lane later pursued his hobby as an amateur plane pilot.

He even lived out of a converted DC-8 passenger jet outside of Nashville, Tennessee, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Met Red on a vacation trip with my mom and dad in the summer of 1969. His brother who lived here in Houston told me to call him and he would show me a recording studio. He showed me Tree Publishing and the RCA studios. We spent two days with him and his wife, Penny in Nashville and out on Old Hickory Lake on his boat. His exposing me to the industry lead me to where I am today. It gave me the desire and confidence to open the door to Andrus Productions in Houston and meet Walter Andrus and...
