Richard H. Hill

1933-2015 PITTSFIELD Richard Haddon "Dick" Hill, 82, passed away at home on July 14, 2015. He was the son of the late Burton C. Hill and Mary H. (Hamilton) Hill. He was predeceased by his brother, Hamilton Hill and sister, Barbara (Hill) Griffith. He was born in Hoosick Falls, NY on April 22, 1933. He grew up in Pittsfield, MA where he attended local schools and was a member of the Pittsfield High School Class of 1951. He was a graduate of the U.S. Armed Forces Institute of Madison, WI and the Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry, Class of 1961, where he received his Associate's Degree. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and spent time stationed in France, which he talked about often. He later served in the Army National Guard, 2nd Battalion of the 104th Infantry, and retired in 1994 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his service with the National Guard, he received awards, commendations and served a few of those years as a Recruiter. He worked for many years in the supermarket business and was a department manager at the former Grand Union, Aldo's and Mazzeo's Markets. He later worked for several years at the Big Y Supermarkets in both Great Barrington & Pittsfield until he retired from full-time employment in 1995. He was a member of the American Legion, the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriffs' Association, and the 104th Infantry Retirees Association. In 1991, he was awarded the Timothy Shepard Citizen of the Year Award by the Pittsfield Police Association for his actions in thwarting an armed robbery. Richard was a true gentleman, devoted husband, and very proud and loving father. He absolutely adored his two grandchildren. He also enjoyed many years with his pet dogs and cats. He easily made countless friends throughout his life and was well known for his kindness, good humor, love of telling stories and humble demeanor. He was hardworking, dependable, a trusted confidant and dispenser of great advice. He was always happiest amongst family and friends, and in his many visits to Cape Cod and Florida. He was also a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox and was thrilled to witness three World Series victories. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 45 years, Helen (Cone) Hill. He is also survived by his two sons, Matthew Hill, and his wife, Amanda, of Pittsfield, MA, and Chris Hill, and his wife, Alicia, also of Pittsfield, MA; two grandchildren, Ella Rose and Noah Christopher Hill, and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service fo Richard Hill will be held Saturday, July 18th, 2015 at 3 p.m. at the Wellington Funeral Home, 220 East St. Pittsfield, MA. Calling hours will precede the service from 2 to 3 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will take place at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made in Richard's name to the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter, 63 Downing Park IV, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
