1954 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Pittsfield - Richard J. "Barnsy" Barnes, 57, of 226 Linden St., Pittsfield died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Born on May 7, 1954 in Pittsfield, he was a son of the late William E. Barnes Sr. and the late Marjorie A. Peaslee. A lifelong resident of Pittsfield, he was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1972 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He also received an associate's degree in recreation from Berkshire Community College.
Mr. Barnes served with the United States Air Force as a military police officer during the Vietnam War. At the time of his death he was employed by the City of Pittsfield in maintenance services at the Berkshire Athenaeum for the past fifteen years. He had also worked at one time at the Elizabeth Freeman Center, Holyoke High School and for the Westfield School Department.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield. He belonged to the ASA Softball Umpires Association and had umpired high school softball and baseball. He also umpired softball at the Berkshire Softball Complex for many years. An avid New York Yankee fan, he enjoyed baseball, bowling in the Commercial Bowling league and collecting baseball memorabilia. He also coached baseball and softball at one time. He loved animals and his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He leaves his wife, the former Becky Leung whom he married on November 6, 2005. A son; James W. Barnes of Pittsfield, a daughter; Laura Truden and her fiancé Delvin Richards of Pittsfield. His step-daughter; Gigi Ng of Pittsfield and his step-son; Alex Ng of Pittsfield. Three brothers; Robert L. Barnes Sr. and his wife Sharon of Pittsfield, Frank C. Barnes Sr. and his wife Cathy of Dalton and George E. Barnes Sr. and his wife Nancy of Fort Lewis, Wash. Five sisters; Ruth G. Barnes, Lillian G. Frederick, Marjorie I. Signor and her husband Michael and Marion E. Christman all of Pittsfield and Beatrice M. Wendell of Dalton. Three grandchildren; Cayvon, Daequam and Na'Kyah and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his longtime friends; Thomas "Hawk" Burt and Cheryl Burt of Pittsfield.
He was predeceased by a brother; William E. Barnes Jr. and by his nephew; Michael J. Signor.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Richard "Barnsy" Barnes who died May 5, 2012 will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert Rennie, chaplain of Hospice Care in the Berkshires. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
