Richard M. Keefner

1933 - 2014 GREAT BARRINGTON Richard M. Keefner, 81, of Christian Hill Road, died June 25 2014, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Great Barrington on Feb. 20, 1933, son of John and Carrie Race Keefner. Richard attended local schools. Richard proudly served his country during the Korean War with the U.S Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and three Bronze Service Stars. Richard worked as a truck driver for the Steven Grain Co. in Great Barrington and then as a carpenter for many years. He was member of the James A. Modolo Post #8348 and enjoyed taking RV trips with his wife. Richard was married to the late Jean R. Keefner for 61 years until she predeceased him on May 19, 2014. Richard is survived by two sons, Michael P. Keefner of Great Barrington and Richard J. Keefner and his wife, Sandra, of Great Barrington; two daughters, Kathy A. Keefner and husband James W. Eichstedt Sr. of Great Barrington, and Laurie J. Keefner and husband, Christian Bourdon of Rhode Island; two sisters, Patricia Pixley and Marion Eastman, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to Richard's wife Jean, Richard was predeceased by six brothers, Robert Keefner, Raymond Keefner, Simon Keefner, Joe Keefner, Walter Keefner and Charles Keefner and by four sisters Flora Markham, Bessie O'Connell, Bertha Mallay and Sylvia Eichstedt. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Richard M. Keefner who died June 25, was private with burial in Elmwood Cemetery with Military Honors with the Rev. Richard Reed officiating. In keeping with Richard's wishes there were no calling hours. BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230 was in charge of arraignments. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Richard's memory may be made to the Great Barrington Police Association, Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Service, Hospice Care in the Berkshires, all in care of the funeral home at 33 South Street Great Barrington, MA.01230.
