Richard A. Murphy Sr. 1920 2011 PITTSFIELD Richard A. Murphy Sr., 91, died on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pittsfield on April 14, 1920 to the late Mark A. and Agnes (Conway) Murphy. Richard attended schools in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School in January of 1939. He retired from E.D. Jones and Beloit Corp. in 1984 after 43 years of service. Richard was very active with the Boy Scouts, he was a Scoutmaster in Troop 18 from St. Mark's Church in the 50's and 60's; he was chairman of the Catholic Lay Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Springfield and he was on the Board of Director's for the Great Trails Council. He received many Boy Scout awards for his time and dedication including the Silver Beaver Award; the St. George's Cross and the Bishop Weldon Scouter's Award. Richard was active with other organizations as well, he was part of the St. Agnes Parish Fund Raising Committee in Dalton; he served on the Board of Directors with the Dalton Council on Aging where he was also chairman and on the Elder Services of Berkshire County where he was the first Berkshire winner of the Silver Dove Award. Richard was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice A. (Harrington) on June 24, 1997 after 52 years of marriage. He will be sadly missed by his son, Richard A. Murphy Jr. and his wife, Linda of Pittsfield; his daughter, Kathleen A. Murphy of Pittsfield; his sister, Rita Spratlin of Pittsfield; his three grandchildren, Kellie Rathbun and her husband Paul, Shaun Murphy and his wife Maneera and Erin Murphy and her companion, David Henriott and his five great grandchildren, Christopher Rathbun, Andrew, Patrick and Molly Murphy and Abigail Henriott. Richard was predeceased by his four brothers, George, Donald, Mark and Robert; and his three sisters, Elizabeth Soutier, Marion Farrell Mongue and Margaret Mohan. A funeral procession will form on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 8 a.m. at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave. Pittsfield. There will be a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mark's Church in Pittsfield with Father John Salatino celebrating. Burial will follow the Liturgy in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. Visiting hours will be Monday, January 2, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in Richard's memory, to the Meals on Wheels/Food Pantry Ministries, c/o St. Mark's Church, 400 West St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
