Dr. Rita W. Mathews, 96, died peacefully at Aarondale Assisted Living in Springfield, VA on the morning of July 27, 2018.

She was born Rita Molly White on July 6, 1922 on Long Island, N.Y. to parents Julius A. and Rita (Kohler) White. A Columbia University graduate, she obtained her Ph.D. in 1973 in molecular biology from the City University of New York. She was an avid explorer, scientific researcher, and Lifetime and Legacy member of the Explorer's Club in N.Y.C. which awarded her their coveted Sweeney medal in 1994 for scientific endeavor and exploration. Earlier, in 1984, along with her co-discoverer, she fractionated the coagulation factor in the blood allowing hemophiliacs relief from non-coagulation.

Her surviving children are Gerard M. Thompson, Molly Thompson, Sarah M. Albamonte. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Christopher, Michael, Brian, Andrea and Daniel and three great-grandchildren: Alice, Rhaidyn and Jaxson. Close cousins include Nancy Craigmyle and her daughter Nanci Worthington.

A funeral service is planned Sat. Nov. 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Trinity Church, 180 Main Street, Sheffield, Mass.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Explorer's Club of N.Y.C. for grants to support students doing valuable research in the sciences.
