Robert Fraker Obituary

Robert Hale Fraker of Lanesboro, MA, died at age 70 on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. Born in White Plains, NY, to Evelyn Holliday Fraker and Guy Cronice Fraker, he grew up in North White Plains and graduated from Valhalla High School in Valhalla, NY. He attended Lake Forest College, where he met his wife of over 50 years, Lillian Fraker.

Following their college years, the couple lived in New York City, where Robert worked as a film librarian, writing catalogue descriptions of classic films.

In 1971 they moved to rural Savoy, Massachusetts, where they founded Savoy Books, selling antiquarian books and manuscripts, a profession from which Robert never retired. He became a member of the ABAA (Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America,) the ILAB (International League of Booksellers,) SNEAB (Southern New England Antiquarian Booksellers,) the Ephemera Society of America, the CBHL (Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries,) and was elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society.

Robert served as chairman of the Savoy School Committee for a number of years, and as the town's representative to the McCann Vocational High School Committee. While living in Savoy he became a passionate gardener, researching early gardening practices and experimenting with older varieties of roses and fruit trees.

In 1982 the Frakers and their two children relocated to Lanesboro, MA, where Robert found new outlets for his horticultural enthusiasms, volunteering at the Berkshire Garden Center and serving, eventually as chairman, on the Lanesboro Tree and Forest Committee. Later, in his capacity as bookseller and scholar, he was asked to appraise the vast library of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Boston.

Robert's mother and brother Bill helped instill in him a love for many types of music. From his youth, he was an avid instrumentalist on banjo, fiddle guitar and mandolin. He and Lillian were founding members of the Bear Bridge Band in 1989, performing bluegrass in the northeast region and spending many happy hours camping and playing music with friends at bluegrass festivals. He was a talented, published songwriter throughout his adult life and penned a portion of the Bear Bridge Band's repertoire. More recently, Robert and Lillian played in the bands, "Tex's Troubadours." and "The Old Time Bluegrass Singers". They also hosted a long-established and still ongoing weekly bluegrass jam in Hancock, MA.

Robert was respected by colleagues and librarians for being able to recognize the unique or significant in any given book or manuscript. This talent extended into the personal realm: he saw and encouraged the unique qualities in friends and acquaintances. He was a mentor to many.

Aside from his wife, Robert leaves a son, Ben Fraker of New Rochelle, NY and his wife, Lupe Fraker, a daughter, Maud Paré of North Clarendon, VT, three grandchildren, Madeline and Jakob Paré and James Fraker, a brother, Guy Fraker of Bloomington, IL and his wife Ruth Ann Fraker, two sisters-in-law, Vera Fraker of Springfield, MA and Lori Steiner of Northampton, MA, four nephews and a niece and a host of beloved friends and colleagues. He is predeceased by his brother, William Fraker.

I played blues guitar in my teenage years and then went on with life barely picking it up for years. I got the bluegrass bug at Winterhawk 20+ years ago and had the great luck to be camped next to Robert. He was playing alone, old time banjo when my wife, JoAnn, urged me to take my guitar over and try to play with him. I told Robert that if I knew the chords I would love to play the rhythm accompaniment for him even though I was new to Bluegrass. He switched to his amazing mandolin and then he patiently wrote the chords down to every song we then played. My first bluegrass jam!!!!
I still have those pages! Robert was a mentor and a true friend and I will miss him greatly.

Where to begin? Robert was one of the smartest, funniest, most creative people I've known, and his life enriched many, many others. When we were in high school, in addition to leading us into a love of the folk music genre, he wrote send-ups like the "Talking Bob Zimmerman Blues," a lampoon of Bob Dylan and his style. No reunion could go ahead without Robert, and he will be guiding our path as we cross that bridge behind him. Watch out for us, Robert, dear friend!

So sad to hear. We have lost a true human in the best sense: he was kind, caring, wise and always engaged with whomever was near by. He taught me so much about what classic bluegrass is and inspired me to learn and share. My thoughts are with Lillian and family.

My partner Todd (now deceased) and I met Robert and Lillian in Savoy when Ben and Maude were toddlers. He was a wonderful mix of intellectual sophistication, and down to earth simplicity, equally at home in New York City and western Massachusetts. He and Lillian were lucky to find each other, and have so many happy and interesting years together. I will miss him even if I saw him so seldom, being 3000 miles away.

Hard to find anybody with so much knowledge and talent, so thoughtful, kind, and knowledgable. I shared Robert's love for rare books and acoustic southern music and always looked forward to seeing and playing music with him and Lillian at the Black Creek festival and other music events in New England and upstate New York. Robert will be sorely missed by a large number of loving relatives and devoted friends.

My deepest condolences to Lillian and Robert's entire family, and to his friends in Bear Bridge and the Old Time Bluegrass Singers. Robert will be deeply missed by all of us in the Bluegrass community. His contributions as a songwriter and performer, as well as his love for traditional bluegrass will continue be an important part of the New England Bluegrass scene.

For all of the more than fifty years of our valued friendship I knew there to be five elemental forces in the universe. Earth and Air. Fire and Water. And Robert Fraker.

Robert, you are well remembered. And you are sorely missed.

My goodness, my sincerest condolences to the whole family. Robert and Lillian and family were our dearest friends from our Hilltown Cooperative School days in Goshen and Ashfield in the early 1970's. We remained in wonderful casual contact with them thru their move from Savoy to Lanesborough. He was the kindest, intelligent, talented and down right most super nice friend that I've ever had. RIP Robert, I/we'll miss you dearly.
