Robert E. Hamm

1924 - 2014 DALTON Robert E. Hamm, 89, of 16 Broadview Terrace, died Saturday at Hillcrest Commons where he had resided for the past few weeks. Born on Aug. 14, 1924, in Gallatin, N.Y., he was a son of Earl and Jennie Coons Hamm. A longtime Dalton resident, he was educated in Hudson, N.Y., schools and was a 1942 graduate of Hudson High School. He also graduated wit honors of the General Electric Apprentice Program (drafting) in 1949 and attended the University of Houston. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy and was the recipient of the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal. A draftsman, he was employed at General Electric Company for over 40 years, retiring in 1986. Bob was an active member of Dalton United Methodist Church where he served as past president trustee, past chairman of Finance Committee, lay leader, and the chair of the church's Bicentennial Committee. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs and the Berkshire Shrine Club, Melha Shrine. He was also a member of the Lodge of Masons and Past Master Wisdom Lodge, Past Patron Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #130, of West Stockbridge, St. Matthew's Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, Knights of the York Rite Cross of Honor, District Deputy Grand Master (1991-1992), Joseph Warren Medal, and Benjamin Hurd Medal. Bob was a recipient of the 33rd Degree Scottish Rite. He was a past committee chairman in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, hunting and fishing. He leaves his wife, Betty-Anne Torrey Hamm, of Dalton, whom he married on Aug. 20, 1966, at St. Martin Episcopal Church; two sons, David R. Hamm of Dalton and Stephen E. Hamm of Longwood, Fla.; a brother, Erwin C. Hamm of Melbourne, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Harold L. Hamm and Stanley E. Hamm. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Robert E. Hamm of Dalton who died June 28, 2014 will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Dalton United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Howe. Burial with military honors will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the DERY FUNERAL HOME on BRADFORD STREET IN PITTSFIELD. A masonic service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Donations in memory of Bob may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to the Roof and Restoration Fund at Dalton United Methodist Church both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
