1949 - 2016 Robert Joseph Rivers, who served as foreman of the Town of Egremont road crew, coached Little League baseball and helped raise money for French Park after serving with valor in Vietnam, died Oct. 23 at his home in North Egremont. He was 67. Born in Pittsfield Oct. 15, 1949 to Bernard Rivers and Constance Borkowski Rivers, he was drafted into the U.S. Army after graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1967 and soon sent to Vietnam. Rivers served with Bravo Company of the First Air Calvary. He was awarded the Purple Heart in recognition for wounds sustained in combat and the Bronze Star Medal for heroism. After returning from Vietnam, Rivers worked with Girardi Distributers in Pittsfield, then on to the Egremont road crew until he retired in 2007 due to illness. His interests included fishing, vintage cars and carpentry at which he excelled. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Gail, of North Egremont; son Trent and wife Elyse Vautrin Rivers of Holyoke; and daughter Chelsea Miles and husband George Miles of Egremont. Other survivors include sisters Patricia Rivers of West Yarmouth; Bernadette Greenleaf of Beverly Hills, Fla; Constance Marchand and husband Don of Lee; brothers Bernard Rivers of Lanesboro; and Dana Rivers and wife Gail of Peru. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Robert Joseph Rivers will be held on Saturday October 29th at 10:00 AM with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Saint Peter's Church with Reverend William P. Murphy, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Egremont. Family will receive friends on Friday October 28 from 4:00 6:00 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington MA 01230.
