Robert W. Whitman 1924-2011 ADAMS Robert W. Whitman, 87, of 14 Summer St., died Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Williamstown Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Brighton, Mass. on August 4, 1924, son of the late Wallace V. and Grace G. Robb Whitman he came to Adams with his parents in 1930 and attended Adams schools, graduating from the former Adams High School in 1943. He first was employed briefly for the General Electric Co. in Pittsfield and then for Breck & Sons in Boston. He then with his father established and operated the former Hardware Shop on Park St. in Adams for forty five years until the fire that destroyed the business and badly damaged the building. He was also a World War II Navy veteran serving three years in the Pacific Theater as a Radioman 2nd class. Mr. Whitman was a member of the First Congregational Church in Adams. He was a twenty year member of the Adams Alert Hose Co., a member of the former Adams Chamber of Commerce, Adams Post 160 of the American Legion, Adams Post 1995 of the VFW, and the New England Hardware Association. His wife the former Estelle A McClement whom he married on October 16, 1947, died August 30, 2008. He is survived by three sons, William Whitman and his wife Mary of Adams, Richard Whitman of Adams and his companion Susan Duquette of Florida Mt., David Whitman and his companion Po Tang of Wakefield, Mass., a sister, Eleanor George of North Adams. Seven grandchildren, Nathaniel, Evan, and John Whitman, Julie Dietrich and her husband Gregory, Laura Alicea, Justin Nowell, and Lily Silver, five great grandchildren, Kayla and Ethan Whitman, Marcus and Brianna Hillard, Abigail Dietrich, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one daughter, Wendy Ann Whitman, two brothers, Archie and Raymond Whitman. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for Robert W. Whitman will Take place Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 11 a.m. from the TROTTIER PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, burial will follow in Maple St. Cemetery in Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Donations in his memory can be made to the Adams Alert Hose Co. in care of the funeral home.
