Roger C. Merrell

1919-2012 PITTSFIELD Roger Clifton Merrell, 93, formerly of Middlefield, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, at Springside Nursing Home of Pittsfield.

Roger was born on May 9, 1919 in Springfield, Mass., the son of the late Henry and Edna Todd Merrell of Agawam, Mass.

Roger graduated from Agawam High School on June 18, 1936 followed by two years studying electrical engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, graduating in 1938. He went to work for Shawinigan Resins in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield that later became Monsanto. During his 38-year career, he served as lead engineer in designing and implementing electrical control systems for chemical processes. He retired as Senior Engineering Specialist in February 1976.

On June 24, 1939, he married his first wife, Jacquelyn Rosemary Clark, their marriage spanned 56 years, until her death on February 17, 1996.

During World War II, he served as a radar and radio specialist in the US Navy. He was at sea in the South Pacific when the war ended.

Roger is survived by his devoted wife, Caral S. Nolley Merrell, whom he married on October 17, 1998 at St. George's Episcopal Church in Lee. He is also survived by his three sons, Everett Merrell of Pittsfield, Roger H. Merrell of Lee, and Richard Merrell and his wife Susan of Middlefield; and a granddaughter, Janis Merrell of Belchertown.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral service for Roger Clifton Merrell will be held on Saturday, October 20th at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Chester with the Rev. Susan Borsella officiating, followed by a reception at the church. Interment will be private. There will be no calling hours. Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to the First Congregational Church of Chester, 334 Skyline Trail, Chester, MA 01011. Please omit flowers.
