Roger F. Phillips Sr.

1928-2013 PITTSFIELD Roger F. Phillips Sr., 84, formerly of Pittsfield, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013 in Fredricksburg, Va. where he resided with his wife Nancy.

Born in Pittsfield on September 16, 1928 he was the son of George and Emma Chase Phillips. He attended Pittsfield schools, graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1946. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy, where he was able to travel the world until his discharge in 1948.

Roger was a hard working family man who was loved and respected by many. As a youth, Roger loved sports of all kind, but his love for the New York Yankees was unparalleled. This love of sports was handed down to his children and grandchildren.

In 1972, with his sons Roger Jr. and Joe, he began the Dewey Athletic Club, which served the youth of Pittsfield's west side first at the former Tucker school, and then later at what is now Conte Elementary school. Through the Dewey A.C., Roger trained countless young men to compete in amateur boxing competitions throughout the New England and Capital District areas. His efforts resulted in many local and regional championships for his fighters. He also was a pioneer in the arena of Western Massachusetts road racing in the 1970s, sponsoring many races in the Berkshires, including the Mt. Greylock Notch Run. Roger ran 22 marathons after taking up running at the age of 41, including numerous Boston marathons.

In 1982, Roger moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where he reveled in the world of championship boxing and world class entertainment. He continued his running and spent many wonderful retirement years in the desert southwest.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Pilette-Phillips, of Fredricksburg, Va.; three daughters, Catherine Dunn and her husband David of North Adams, Mary Brooks of Queen Creek, Az., and Laura Deluca of Streetsboro, Oh.; two sons, Joseph Phillips and his wife Diane, and Daniel Phillips and his wife Susan, of Las Vegas, Nev.; his brother, Hector Phillips, and a sister, Helen Errichetto, both of Pittsfield. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Loretta; a son, Roger F. Phillips Jr.; a grandson, Derrick Rondeau; three brothers, George Phillips, Carl Phillips, and Ronald Phillips; and two sisters, Charlotte Tedford and Shirley McNeil.

No immediate services will be held and a memorial service will be planned in the near future.
