Ruby M. Hanson

1926 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Ruby M. Hanson, 87, passed peacefully into her Heavenly home on Thursday, June 26, at Mt. Greylock Extended Care in Pittsfield. Ruby was born on September 16, 1926, in Quincy, to Yrjo M. Matson and Hilma Malin Matson. She graduated from Boston University in 1948 with a Masters in Spanish. Ruby was an assistant editor of "33" Magazine at Manufacturer's Hanover Bank in New York City and later worked at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton, N.J. She was a talented artist in mediums as varied as batik, watercolors, charcoal, and oils. She was very proud of her Finnish ancestry and was a "proper Bostonian" all her life. Ruby was married to the Rev. Edward R. Hanson, who predeceased her in 2008, for 49 years. She leaves her daughter, Claudia H. Bellis, and her husband, Christopher, of South Windsor, Conn.; a son, Stephen M. Hanson, and his wife, Susan, of Lido Beach, Long Island, N.Y.; beloved grandchildren, Zachary Bellis, Kyle Bellis, Daniel Hanson, and Kate Hanson; nieces Priscilla Matson, and Ruth M. Mavilia and family; sister-in-law Margaret M. H. Shelby, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and nephews Franklin and Thomas Shelby and families. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsfield with the Rev. Timothy Weisman, pastor, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Capital Fund in care of the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
