Sara Adelson

1929 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Sara Estelle Adelson, dedicated peace and civil rights activist, died Oct. 27, 2014. Born in Pittsfield Dec. 28, 1929, to Louis and Rose LaFontana Bernasconi, she attended Great Barrington public schools including Bryant Elementary, was a 1947 graduate of Searles High School, and later attended Berkshire Community College. She actively protested the Vietnam War and worked tirelessly for civil rights. She was an advocate for women and the underprivileged, co-creating the original Berkshire County Women's Center on Church Street in Stockbridge, and volunteered at the West Side Community Action Center in Pittsfield. She was Vice President of the Knesset Israel Sisterhood of Pittsfield and was instrumental in establishing the WEB DuBois Memorial in Gt. Barrington. Her husband of 49 years, Myron "Mike" Adelson, died on May 22, 1999. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Louise Malloy; and her beloved grandson, Jefren. She is survived by a loving family; daughter, Natalie Reid (nee Rebecca Adelson) of Novato, Calif.; son, David Adelson, formerly of West Stockbridge; daughter, Jackie A. Salvaggio of Lenox; and grandson, Eli Adelson of Chang Mai, Thailand. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Frank Salvaggio of Lenox; and her former daughter-in-law, Allura Janet Adelson of Vero Beach, Fla. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at a later date.
