Sr. Mary Dooley, SSJ

Sister Mary Dooley, (Eleanor Maria), 90, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield in her 70th year in the Congregation, died on November 14 in the Mont Marie Health Care Center, Holyoke, MA. Born in Cambridge, MA, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (O'Neil) Dooley. Sister Mary Dooley entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, MA from St. Philip Parish, Grafton, MA. Her early education was in the parochial schools of Worcester and she was graduated from St. Stephen High School, Worcester. She earned a B.A. degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, MA and a M.A. from Assumption College, Worcester. She earned a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne, Paris, France and a Doctor of Divinity from Aquinas Institute, Dubuque, Iowa. She was awarded Honorary Doctorates from American International College, Assumption College, Fitchburg State College and College of Our Lady of the Elms. Sister Mary taught at St. Joseph High School, North Adams from 1947-1965 and at the College of Our Lady of the Elms from 1968-1971. From 1971-79 she served as President of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield and from 1979-1993 as President of the College of Our Lady of the Elms. She also held the office of National President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and was an official delegate to the Installations of Popes John Paul I and John Paul II. Among the many honors which Sister Mary received were: the Pynchon Award, presented by the Advertising Club of Springfield; the National Human Relations Award by the Connecticut-Western Massachusetts Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; the Via Veritatis Medal, presented by Elms College; and Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques from the Government of France. Sister Mary Dooley retired to Mont Marie St. Joseph residence in 2003 and entered Mont Marie Health Care Center in 2004.
