Stephen Francis Austin

1939-2012 TOPSHAM Stephen Francis Austin, 73, died on December 2, 2012, after a brief, but brave-hearted struggle with brain cancer. He died at home surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born on September 25, 1939, in Brattleboro, Vt., the son of James A. and Euretta (Fuller) Austin. He graduated from St. Michael's High School, Class of 1957. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree at Saint Michael's College in Winooski Park, Vt. In 1961, Steve was awarded a national Defense Fellowship to continue his studies in Chemistry.He was awarded his MS degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Vermont in 1963.

Steve began his career in Research and Development with E.I. DuPont in Chattanooga, Tenn. He then went to work for General Electric Company, Plastics Division as a Development Chemist in Polycarbonate Research in 1965 in Mount Vernon, IN. In 1970, Steve was transferred to GE Plastics Headquarters in Pittsfield, MA. During the last two decades of his career, Steve was General Electric Plastics Division Manager of Regulatory Relations. After 38 years of dedicated service with General Electric, Steve retired in 2003. In 2005, Steve and his wife Linda, moved to Maine.

While not Vermont, Maine living pleased Steve. He especially enjoyed Maine's beautiful, rugged coast, sunsets, and crystal clear air. Steve was a prolific reader and enjoyed stimulating conversations. He enjoyed Sudoku, crossword puzzles, working in the garden and teaching his grandchildren the states and their capitals. Steve always had a ready smile when greeting people. But Steve's family was his greatest joy.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Linda. He will be sadly missed by his two sons, Stephen F. Austin of Manchester, Conn., and Jeffrey A. Austin and his wife Megan of Brunswick, Maine, and his grandchildren, Blakely Elizabeth Austin and Charles Valleau Austin; also, his devoted brothers: James F. Austin of Burlington, Vt., Edward M. Austin and wife Susan of Pittsburgh, Pa., Paul M. Austin and wife Mary of Essex Junction, Vt., his brother David's widow Pauline Austin of Rutland, Vt., and his cousins: Jean Medrek of East Longmeadow, Mass., Elaine and husband Walter Meyer of Towshend, Vt., Larry and wife Judy Austin of Montpelier, Vt., Carol and husband Bob Johnson of W. Chesterfield, N.H., and many, many nephews and nieces. Steve also will be missed by his in-laws Pat and Tom Valleau of Portland, Maine and many residents at Highland Green in Topsham, Maine.

Stephen was predeceased by his father and mother, James and Euretta Austin, and his brother, David A. Austin.

In the spring, Steve's family will bring him back to Brattleboro, Vt., for a Mass at St. Michael's Catholic Church and burial in the Austin Family section of St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery. A family celebration of Steve's life will follow.
