Thornton R. Calkins

1921 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Thornton R. Calkins, 93, of 10 Darlene Ave. died Thursday evening, July 10, 2014, at the Springside Long Term Care Facility. He was born in Troy, N.Y., on Jan. 15, 1921, the son of Joel and Hazel Ross Calkins. Educated in the local schools, he received his degree in Chemistry from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. He was employed as a chemist at the former General Electric Co. Plastics Division, retiring in 1983, with 40 years of service. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted Oct. 8, 1942, and served throughout the Asian Pacific Theatre and was discharged on Nov. 12, 1945. A Life Member of the B.P.O.E., Pittsfield Lodge 272, Mr. Calkins was the long serving treasurer for the Elks for many years. A generous man, he enjoyed being a handyman as he was able to fix just about anything. He was always designing and completing projects in and around his home, including, finishing his basement with his late brother, Joel. "Cal," as he was known to many, loved to maintain his garden, his landscaping, his many tools and replenishing his bird feeder which attracted a wide array of animals. A patient man, he prided himself on always being practical and he was an avid Red Sox fan. He is survived by his wife, the former Angelina Provenzano, with whom he would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this coming Oct. 2. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Susan Calkins and her husband, Karl Dastoli of Richmond, and Sheri Loiodice and her husband, Dr. John Loiodice of Stockbridge; three grandchildren, Sheryl Kosakowski and her husband, Edward Muska, Michael Loiodice, and Tony Calkins and his fiance, Keely Hebler; three great-grandchildren, Radek Muska, and Melissa and Chris Loidoice; his nephews and nieces, Judith Coty, Nancy Turco, Kathleen Wolfgang, Joelle Chapman, Ruth Pratt, Glenn Calkins, Antoinette Scullary, Susie MacDonald Friedman, Laurie Mancivalano and Rusty MacDonald; his great-nieces, Michelle and Nicole Mancivalano, Gina Bertallocci, and Krista Espinoza. He was predeceased by his brothers, Elliot Calkins, Joel Calkins and his wife, Eunice Calkins; by his sister, Ruthie Calkins; by sister-in-law, Stella Provenzano; his nephew, Timothy Calkins, and his niece, Angela MacDonald. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calkins, Thornton R., age 93, of Pittsfield, died July 10. The Celebration of his Life will be MONDAY, beginning at 9 a.m. at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME and will continue there with Funeral Services beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to in care of the funeral home.
