1927-2015 PITTSFIELD Mrs. Velma C. Lefkowitz, 87, formerly of 361 Dalton Ave., passed away peacefully January 21, 2015,at St .Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City,Utah. Born in Pittsfield, April 19, 1927, the daughter of the late Luigi and Giusseppina Barbaro Merletto, she attended local schools and was a 1945 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Continuing her education, she received a degree in Early Childhood Education in 1976 from the University of Massachusetts. For 33 years Velma was a devoted teacher and director of the pre-school and day care programs at the former Girl's Club and Girls, Inc. In 2001 she relocated to Salt Lake City to be with her son, Michael and her grandson, Alex. Velma thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, being a Grandma, dining with her Friday night dinner group, socializing with the Red Hat Society Ladies, and had a special place in her heart for the employees and customers at Einstein's Coffee and Bagel Shop. Velma was a kind, energetic, loving and generous woman and will be greatly missed. She and her husband of 50 years, the late Michael H. Lefkowitz, were married on Nov. 24, 1949. Mike passed away on March 29, 2000. She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her daughter, Gale Lefkowitz and her husband Hoyt Tarola, of Ojai, Calif.; her two sons, Michael Lefkowitz of Salt Lake City, Utah and Mark Lefkowitz and his wife, Katie of Pittsfield. She also leaves to mourn her passing her beloved grandsons, Alex of Salt Lake City, and Mason of Pittsfield, along with countless other family and friends. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Arthur Merletto, Leila Bona and Rose Soldato. FUNERAL NOTICE: Mrs. Velma C. Lefkowitz died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015 at 8 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, celebrated by Rev. Peter Narango, Parochial Vicar. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
