1922 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Mr. Wayne James Vandergrift, 92, of 35 Morewood Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014 at Melbourne Place Assisted Living. Born on June 22, 1922 in Highland Park, N.J., he was the son of the late James Bacon Vandergrift and Lottie West Vandergrift. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1940, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rutgers University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and his Master of Science from the University of Illinois in 1949. During World War II, he served several years in the United States Army in the Philippines. He was employed by the General Electric Company in Pittsfield as an electrical engineer for 37 years. He served on the Winter Carnival Committee for many years and volunteered throughout his life, always willing to serve officiating at ski races, reading for the blind, or operating the rope tows at Goodell Hollow. Following his retirement in 1985, he drove for the Berkshire County Red Cross for many years. He also enjoyed sailing, skiing, visiting friends and traveling to visit his children. He was predeceased by his wife, Rita Robenstein Vandergrift after sharing 60 years together and by his sister, the late Theo Robbins. He leaves two daughters, Christine Lusignan and her husband, David of Houston, Texas and Carol Middelberg and her husband, Ted of Austin, Texas. He also leaves two sons; James Vandergrift and his wife, Ann of Seattle, Wash. and William Vandergrift and his wife, Janice of Versailles, Ky. He leaves nine grandchildren; Kim Lusignan Lowe and her husband, Jacob, Amy Lusignan, Laura Middelberg Rappaport and her husband, Adam, Paul Middelberg, Casey Vandergrift, Tyler Vandergrift and his wife, Ashley, and Christopher, Patrick and Lindsey Vandergrift. He also leaves one great-grandchild, Kaya Rappaport. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield celebrated by the Rev. Monsignor Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph Church. Burial will follow at St Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Dery Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mr. Vandergrift may be made to the Red Cross of Berkshire County or the St. Mark Church of Pittsfield Food Pantry both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
