William Broderick Obituary
William James Broderick

1926 - 2015 PITTSFIELD William James Broderick, 89, died Sunday, November 22, 2015 surrounded by his family. William, lovingly called Bill by his friends and family, was born in Pittsfield, MA on January 3, 1926. He grew up in Pittsfield with his older sister, Mary, his father, William, his mother, Helena Prendergast, and his four doting aunts, Lizzy, Minnie, Sarah, and Kate Prendergast. Bill graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1943. After graduating, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. He carried out his tour of duty working on convoys in the Panama Canal and the waters around Central America. Upon returning home, Bill completed a post-graduate year at Cranwell. During his time home after the war, Bill spent time with his family and fostered his life-long love of golf. After finishing his time at Cranwell, Bill headed to Chestnut Hill to complete his undergraduate degree at Boston College, of which he was a devoted fan. Upon graduation from Boston College in 1951, Bill returned home to Pittsfield where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Elaine Morrier. Elaine and Bill married on July 10, 1954. They lived a beautiful life together, raising their seven children hand-in-hand and serving as active members of St. Theresa parish. Bill was a devoted teacher, teaching mathematics at Pittsfield High School from 1952 to 1988, serving as the head of the department from 1956. In addition to teaching, Bill was also a long-time coach at Pittsfield High, where he coached hockey and golf, and at the Pittsfield Boys Club, where he coached hockey. He also served as an adjunct professor for many years at Berkshire Community College. Bill was also the treasurer of the Berkshire County Teachers' Credit Union. He was a member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club where he was an avid golfer. He had a dear group of friends and loved spending time with them on the golf course and at weekly Monday lunches at Del Gallo's. Above all, Bill was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was their greatest cheerleader, their biggest fan, and their strongest ally. He devoted his life to their happiness and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elaine; his seven children, William, Thomas (Ann), Raymond (Denise), Mary (Kathryn), Ann (Thomas), Sheila, and John; and his seven grandchildren, Katherine, Dylan, Cailee, Sadie, Ryan, Harry, and Brody. Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary and his son-in-law, Dr. William J. Dean III. The family would like to give particular thanks to the staff of At Home with Berkshire Place and Berkshire Medical Center for their wonderful caregiving.
