William R. McCarty

1924 - 2015 PITTSFIELD William R. McCarty, age 91, died Saturday March 7, surrounded by his loved ones. William was born on Jan. 30, 1924 son of the late John and Frances Buntin McCarty. He was a 1942 graduate of St. Joseph's High School. A lifelong resident of Pittsfield, he was a member of the Massachusetts Organization of Engineers and Scientists. He was employed at the Massachusetts State Highway Department as a Civil and Road Construction Engineer for more than 30 years. Prior to that he was employed at General Electric and Eaton Paper Company. A World War II Veteran, he participated in the invasion of Normandy and saw duty in France, Central Europe, Adriatic Campaign and Rhineland, for which he was awarded five Battle Stars. Bill was a very friendly and sociable man, always ready with a joke. He enjoyed his daily walk, his pets, and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, the former Elaine F. McCarthy, whom he married June 5, 1948. He also leaves two sons, Denis C. and his wife, Pam, of Dalton, and Mark T. and his wife, Sally, of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, Brian and Katie McCarty, Kelly Ziemba and her husband, James, and Erin Redd and her husband, Charles; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Margaret Raftery of Pittsfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin R. McCarty on September 16, 2002; and a brother, John J. McCarty. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Church celebrated by Rev. A. Peter Gregory Pastor. Inurnment will be in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery at a later date. Calling hours will be on Tuesday From 4 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Charles Church Memorial Fund or to the Kevin McCarty Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
