1924 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
William L. Scrivens
North Adams - Mr. William L. Scrivens, 88, of 584 East Main St., North Adams, passed away Wednesday, April 4 at Williamstown Commons, surrounded by his family. He was a lifetime resident of the City.
Bill, much cherished by his family, was born in North Adams on March 6, 1924, one of ten children of Clarence H. and Evelyn (Bedard) Scrivens. He graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School in North Adams 1942, and attended the former State Teacher's College.
Bill's professional life was in sales, including early stints selling cars and mobile homes, and then a 40-year distinguished career as a life insurance professional. He received multiple quality and sales awards during his 20 years in sales and management at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and almost 20 years in two separate stints at Prudential Life Insurance Co., from which he retired in 1988 as a Sales Manager.
Bill was a decorated World War II Army veteran with the 1538th division, and served in the Pacific theater in the Philippines. An ardent Republican, he was a member of the Republican City Committee for 20 years and helped run Senator Jack Fitzpatrick's two successful campaigns in the 1970s.
Before a debilitating illness, he was a life-long communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, where he served as usher and volunteer for decades. He also volunteered for several years with the Chamber of Commerce at their tourist booth, proudly promoting Northern Berkshire's attractions. He was an avid gardener and golfer, starting with his caddying days in his early teens, and was a true blue New York Yankees fan. Above all, he loved nothing more than spending time with his family.
Bill leaves his wife of 62 years, the former Mary T. Robare, his son Paul Scrivens, and his wife Kerry of Basalt, Colo.; two daughters, Meredith Greene and her husband Mark, of Stafford Springs, Conn., and Rosemary Scrivens of Worcester; four grandchildren, Kelley and Chelsea Scrivens of Glenwood, Colo., and Emily and Thomas Greene of Stafford Springs. Bill is also survived by three sisters, Margaret Perreault and Florence Haskins, both of North Adams, and Alice Howarth of South Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers; Fred, Hank, and Jack; and three sisters, Lillian DeSanty, Vivian Swift, and Mary Scrivens.
