William Volk Obituary
William Volk

1948 - 2014 WEST CUMMINGTON William A. Volk, 66, died Thursday, Aug. 14, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He struggled with multiple sclerosis for many years and finally succumbed to pneumonia. He was surrounded by his family when he passed. He was born July 11, 1948, in Liberty, N.Y., the son of Anthony and Laila Volk. He attended Liberty High School and graduated in 1970. After high school he graduated from Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY with a degree in mechanical engineering. While in college he was instrumental in establishing the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity. Following graduation, he was a very active member of the fraternity's alumni association for many years. In 1985, he graduated, cum laude, from Western New England School of Law. He opened his own engineering business and practiced law predominately in the Hampshire County District Court. He also served the Town of Cummington as a Select Board member and was elected Town Moderator for many years. At the time the Hilltown Health Center in Worthington, Mass. planned an expansion, he offered his engineering experience to the design, as well as procuring grant monies for the project. In 1993, he bought a hot air balloon and soon attained his pilot's license and his commercial pilot's license. This was his passion, and he flew whenever he could. He also enjoyed skiing, camping, hiking, canoeing, and swimming. He received a great deal of pleasure from the various dogs he owned throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Culbertson) Volk, of West Cummington, and his daughter Lucinda Volk of Camp Hill, Penn. as well as cousins in Interlaken, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of Bill's life will be held in the fall. The time and place will be determined and posted in the paper.
