Zelia Betit 1931-2012 CHESHIRE Zelia Betit, 80, died March 9th 2012, surrounded by her husband, children, and grandchildren at her home in Cheshire. Zelia was born on August 31st, 1931 in Postalesio, Italy and immigrated to the United States in 1937 with her parents, Pietro and Elena (nee Betolatti) Smachetti. She lived her entire life in the Berkshires. She graduated from Adams High School in 1949 and worked for many years as a book keeper/ accountant, most recently at Berkshire Radiological Associates, Pittsfield, MA. Zelia is survived by her devoted husband, Edward Betit with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. Together they raised four children, Diane Ponti of Easthampton, Mass., Michael Betit of Cheshire, Peter Betit of Boston, Mass., and John Betit of Garden City, N.Y. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Jason Ponti, John Ponti, Krysta Betit, Lynsey Betit, Samuel Betit, Sophia Betit, and Catherine Betit. She was predeceased by her brother Alessandro Smachetti and younger sister Mary Bednarz. Zelia was an avid and highly skilled seamstress and quilter who delighted in gifting her quilts to beloved family members and friends. She was a loyal friend and a faithful and active member of the St. Mary's Parish community. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Rite of Reception of The Body will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire, MA on Monday, March 12th at 4 p.m. with calling hours to continue in the church until 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 13th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Cheshire. The DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
