Helen M. Ryan Brown

1922-2014 PITTSFIELD Mrs. Helen M. Ryan Brown, age 92, of Highview Drive Pittsfield, died Monday morning at Berkshire Medical Center after a long and happy life. She was born in Troy, N.Y., January 20, 1922, the daughter of the late John and Mary Delaney Ryan. She was educated in the local schools there and was a 1939 graduate of Catholic Central High School. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam, NY., in 1943. She and others in her nursing class enlisted in the military after graduation and served their country during World War II. Helen was a U.S. Army Air Corps Flight Nurse and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant serving with the 804th Medical Evacuation Air Squadron in the Pacific. She was a member of the World War II Flight Nurses Association, was secretary of the Air Corps Nurses Association as well as the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association. She moved to Pittsfield in 1950 when she married her late husband Francis W. Brown of Pittsfield, who died July 11, 1986. A former member of St. Francis Church, she was a long time member of its Rosary Sodality and later served as a Eucharistic Minister for over 20 years. When St. Francis Church closed she attended both St. Agnes and St. Charles Churches. Helen was known and loved by many as Sis, or Aunt Sis. She loved to travel and her spirit has touched many corners of this earth. She was an avid Red Sox Fan as well as the UAlbany Men's basketball team's greatest fan. She loved doing her daily crossword puzzle in ink. She was a well fashioned woman who always had a kind word to say. She was predeceased by her husband Frank who died in 1986 and her older sister Betty who died as a child in 1927. She is survived by her son Michael F. Brown and his wife Kristen of Mechanicsburg, PA, their four children Ryan, Conor, Delaney, Cameron; her daughter Ellyn and her partner Bryan of Pittsfield and their three children Emily, Aidyn, and Tyler Mountz; her two great grandchildren Aubree and Vivian. Her brother and sister-in-law Paul and Sandy Ryan of Long Island NY. She also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Brown, Helen M. " Sis", age 92, died March 3rd. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9:15 am from the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME followed with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Charles Church with the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow on Tuesday morning at 10:00AM at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Sunday from 4 to 7PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Helen's memory to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
