1929 - 2014 PITTSFIELD John L. Groves, 84, of Allengate Ave., passed away Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center, following a sudden illness. Born in Pittsfield, on Sep. 11, 1929, the son of John L. and Sara Palmer Groves, he was educated in local schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1947. He attended the evening division of North Adams State College from 1962 until 1965. John was a Korean War veteran, serving in the 7th Regt., 1st Marine Division, in Korea and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He was awarded the Navy Combat Ribbon for serving in combat areas while stationed in Korea. Following his service with the Marines he served in the Air Force Reserves from 1955 to 1958, and was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was employed by General Electric in the Ordnance Division for 41 years, retiring in 1989. John was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, the GE Pensioners Club, the GEAA, Skyline Country Club and the National Rifle Association. He was a member the Mystic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Pittsfield and was a Past Master of the lodge. A member of Charles A. Persip, Post 68 American Legion and the 1st Marine Division Assoc. John was a long time First Aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross and the National Ski Patrol, a 30 year member and co-founder of the Brodie Mountain Ski Patrol, as well as a member of the National Ski Patrol Alumni Association. John leaves his wife of 63 years, the former Priscilla A. Des, whom he married Jan. 7, 1951; children, Stephen Groves and his wife, Pamela, of Pittsfield, Deborah Powers of Pittsfield, and Scott Groves of Apple Valley, Minn.; grandchildren, Christopher Groves, Shelby Patton, Trevor Groves, Justin Powers, Sienna Powers, Megan Groves, and Emily Groves; great-grandchildren, Sophia-Marie Groves and Lilly Patton; sister, Sally Cosby of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for John L. Groves will be held Friday, March 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Ralph Howe, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery.
