Dorothy T. Casey

1926 - 2014 GREAT BARRINGTON Dorothy "Dot" Casey, 87, a lifelong resident of Great Barrington, died Saturday, May 3 2014, at Timberlyn Heights Nursing Home in Great Barrington. She was born in Great Barrington on July 4, 1926, daughter of John and Della O'Connell Casey. Dorothy graduated from Bryant School in 1940, the former Searles High School class of 1944, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Science from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, Mass., in 1949. While at both Searles and Our Lady of the Elms she played on the varsity basketball team for four years. Later, Dorothy took graduate courses at Springfield College where she received her degree in Physical Education. Dorothy's family owned the former Jack's Restaurant on Railroad St. and later Bridge St. She worked there while growing up and while teaching Physical Education in the Great Barrington School District. She stopped teaching in 1959 and operated the former Jack's Package Store on Bridge St., which her family opened following the closing of Jack's Restaurant. In the late 1970's, Dorothy sold her package store license to Trotta's and retired due to health reasons. Dorothy loved sports and enjoyed reading. She was a life time member and communicant of St. Peter's Church and a member of the Alumni of Our Lady of the Elms. Dorothy is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, among them, Michael Casey and Kelly Milan. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Tuller on May 12, 1965, and brother, John Casey Jr., who passed on Nov. 26, 2006. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Dorothy T. "Dot" Casey, who died May 3, will be held on Friday May 9 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Peter's Church with the Reverend William P. Murphy pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday May 8, from 4-6 PM at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Dorothy's memory may be made to Golden Knight Basketball in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
