LANESBOROUGH Albert Gavenas, 91, of Lanesborough, May 1, 2014. Born and raised in Pittsfield, he was a son of Michael and Elizabeth Dagas Gavenas, both emigrated from Lithuania. Albert graduated from Pittsfield High School and attended Bryant College. He proudly served his country during World War II with the Army Air Force. A chef, he worked at the Cork n' Hearth Restaurant in Lee and for other area restaurants. He also worked for Virgilio Construction and managed his family's properties. He loved the Berkshire Hills and was happiest golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening, or competitively sailing his Olympic Class dinghy on Lake Pontoosuc. He also fished the region extensively, towing his boat to choice spots from Canada, throughout New England, and to Cape Cod. He was predeceased by his only sibling, his brother, John, who also grew up in Pittsfield and raised his family in Miami, Fla. He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria, of Lanesborough, whom he married on Nov. 6, 1971, and who shared his passion for cooking, sailing, and gardening; his two nephews, John D. Gavenas and his wife, Linda Niemiec, of Hollywood, Fla., and Steven P. Gavenas and his wife, Nancy, and their children, John C. "Jake" Gavenas and Angelena N. "Lena" Gavenas, all of South Pasadena, Calif. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for Albert Gavenas, who died May 1, 2014, will be held at a later date to be announced. The DERY FUNERAL HOME is handling arrangements.
