Arthur L. Plumb

1924 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Arthur L. Plumb, 89, formerly of Auburn Street in Pittsfield and later of Devonshire Estates, Lenox, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Mount Carmel Care Center in Lenox. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 28, 1924, the son of the late Henry W. and Effie Barnes Plumb, he attended Pittsfield schools and was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He completed several continuing education courses through General Electric Company. A World War II veteran, Mr. Plumb was inducted into the United States Navy on May 31, 1943. He served as a Radioman Second Class aboard the USS Brant, which was in harbor to support the D-Day invasion. He was honorably discharged on March 7, 1946. Mr. Plumb was employed in the coil winding department in the Power Transformer Division of General Electric Company for more than 40 years. He retired as a Methods and Material Planner in 1987. He was a member of the General Electric Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs. Mr. Plumb was a life-long member of First Baptist Church in Pittsfield. He served as an usher and a deacon, as well as on many other church boards and committees. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling and was a member of local golf and bowling leagues. He also enjoyed fishing and was an avid Red Sox fan. Mr. Plumb was loved by children for his kind and gentle nature. He will be remembered for his artistic talent. In his later years, he created many finely detailed pencil drawings. Mr. Plumb's wife, the former Elaine Barker, whom he married Dec. 27, 1945, in Notre Dame Church, died Jan. 30, 2013. He is survived by a daughter, Susan E. Bach, and her husband Wolfgang, of Dalton; a son, Ronald A. Plumb, and his wife, Jean, of Tigard, Ore.; three grandchildren, Lisa Jarvis, and her husband, Brian, of Grantham, N.H., Bethany Plumb and Matthew Plumb, both of Portland, Ore.; a great grandson, Dustin Jarvis, and beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Plumb, and by a sister, Virginia Cunningham. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service for Arthur L. Plumb will be held Monday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield with the Rev. Sheila Sholes-Ross, Senior Minister, officiating. Burial will be private in Pittsfield Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
