Charles R. Ramsey
1917 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Charles R. Ramsey, aka Bob, at age 97 joined his beloved wife, Margaret Koenig, on Monday, July 14, 2014. Charles was born in Pittsfield on July 2, 1917. He married his loving partner and helpmate on November 11, 1941. He worked cutting and delivering ice from Onota Lake, in the Mill, and then at GE where he was the foreman of a machine shop until he retired to rescue and renovate all kinds of buildings and properties. He had a wealth of accomplishments for which his heavenly father can commend him. He was the "go to" person for friends, family and co-workers whenever there was a need for support or his creative eye to solve the unsolvable. The community has benefitted from Charles' visions and skills, always being willing to teach and mentor others. When Charles and Margaret bought 20 acres on Lakeway Drive, it held several condemned buildings, a steep hill and a swamp at the end of the then existing Burbank Park. Charles visualized a clean sandy beach for Pittsfield youth to enjoy, a home for his family and cottages for people who appreciated Onota Lake. He made all of this come true and, today, the Wednesday night music festivities at Controy's Pavilion are on "Ramsey's Beach." Being a visionary, he was always willing to be the person to do something about what he saw needed doing. A man with a huge heart, he will be missed by his daughters, the Rev. Carol Ramsey of Lenox and Tress Ramsey, who with her partner, David Clark reside in El Sobrante, Calif.; his son, Robert and wife, Cheryl of Rochester, N.Y., their two daughters, Dana Alexander and husband, Scott of Penn Yan, N.Y., and their four children, Lee Anne Weldon and her husband, Christopher, of San Francisco with their two children and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Julia Farrell, Gert Ramsey, and Rita Pippa, and by one brother, Bill Ramsey. Charles' family is deeply grateful to Elder Services and all the "helpers" who made it possible for him to stay in his home, and to the wonderful staff at Kimball Farms Nursing Care and Hospice Care in the Berkshires.
