Robert Sharby 1919 - 2009 PITTSFIELD Robert Joseph Sharby, 90, died Thursday, July 30, at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided for the past 19 months. Born in St. Albans, Vt., on June 8, 1919, he was the youngest of 10 children of Joseph C. and Lurena Smith Sharby, and was educated in New Hampshire and Vermont schools. A World War II veteran, Mr. Sharby enlisted with the Army on Jan. 3, 1941. He served as a Medical Aidman with the 1272nd Medical Detachment, and from February 1942 to October 1944, saw tours of duty in Australia and New Guinea, for which he was decorated with two bronze stars. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the American Defense Service Medal, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Technician Fifth Grade on Aug. 23, 1945. Mr. Sharby enjoyed a long career as a theatre manager. For many years, he was employed at the former Colonial Theatre, and the Palace and Strand Theatres in Pittsfield; at the Western Massachusetts Theatre in Springfield; then, at the Mohawk in North Adams; the Berkshire Drive In and the Pittsfield Drive In; the Sunset Drive In, in Lanesborough; and lastly at the Starlite Drive In in North Reading, Massachusetts. After the theatre, he worked in the warehouse at Standard Duplicating Machine in Andover until retiring in 1995. Mr. Sharby was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and tennis. Mr. Sharby leaves his wife, the former Lorette R. Lebel, whom he married April 22, 1946, at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Lewiston, Maine. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert J. Sharby, Jr., and his wife, Nancy, of Newton Highlands, Mass.; two daughters, Theresa M. Sharby and her companion, Robert Earls of Ocala, Fla., and Diane C. Stolberg and her husband, James S. Stolberg, of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Andrea Bent and her husband, Christopher, Justin Sharby and his wife, Jennifer, and Zachary Sharby; and a great granddaughter, Skylar Sharby. FUNERAL NOTICE: There are no funeral services or calling hours.
