James D. Brown
1936 - 2012 PITTSFIELD James Dexter Brown, 76, of 77 Onota St., Pittsfield and formerly of 530 Tunnel Rd., Rowe, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Berkshire Medical Center.
He was born in North Adams on Jan. 20, 1936, son of William and Myrtle (Estes) Brown. He attended schools in Amherst and attended Amherst High School. Mr. Brown was a veteran of the
, enlisting in the
in 1953 and serving until June of 1956. Jim joined the city of North Adams Fire Dept. in 1959 and served for 30 years, retiring as a lieutenant. In 1968, he became the first-ever president of the fire dept. Union Local 1781 FFACCO of the fire fighters AFL-CIO. He was president for 12 years and member of the negotiating committee for 23 years. Jim was elected to the North Adams Retirement Board in 1976, becoming chairman in 1980 and serving as chairman until 2012. In 2011, Jim received the Public Service Award from the Mass Retirement Board, and in 1980, was named the city of North Adams Firefighter of the Year.
He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. He was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and the Boston Celtics.
His wife was the former Nancy A. Bullett, who died on Sept. 21, 2009. They were married on Jan. 24, 1980.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Lloyd and her husband John of North Adams and Jamie O'Dell, and her husband Stephen of Lee; two stepchildren, Richard Sherry of Apopka, Fla., and Stephanie Geibner and her husband, Mark, of Ludlow; 11 grandchildren, including his two special granddaughters, Chloe and Camryn O'Dell, and one great grandchild. He also leaves one sister, Marlene Miller and her husband, Norman, of North Adams; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dogs, Bella, Blackie, and Brownie.
Five sisters and one brother are deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for James Brown will be Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at 10:15 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday from 4-7 p.m.
