Mary Margaret Gop

1921-2012 Mary Margaret Gop 91, died Saturday November 17, at Fairview Hospital.

She was born in Sheffield, on October 22, 1921 the daughter Howard and Fanny Vosburgh Bentley. When Mary was three years old her mother passed away and she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle (Viola and Arthur Ames) of Hillside Ave. Mary attended local schools Dewey and Searles. She worked at the former Endicott Johnson Shoe Store. Later she furthered her education and became an LPN working at Great Barrington Health Care, loving her work.

Mary was a longtime resident living on Hillside Avenue, she married her high school sweetheart Joe on July 14, 1938 in Hillsdale N.Y., and enjoyed 62 years together. They retired to Mesa, Ariz., for 20 years, and after his death she moved to Venice, Fla., near her son Joe Jr and wife Myrna, returning in 2005 to the Berkshires living in Ashley Falls. Mary enjoyed being called Peggy and had a great sense of humor.

She loved knitting, raising Boston Terriers, and spending time with her family. Mary became a resident of Fairview Commons where she enjoyed many friends and nursing staff.

The family wishes to thank the CCU staff and nurses at Fairview Hospital for all their care and kindness.

Mary leaves two daughters, Patricia Kendall of Hartland, Vt., and Joanne MacNeil and her husband James Bernoi of Great Barrington, two sons, Joseph John Gop Jr, and his wife Myrna of Venice, Fla., and Gary Gop and his wife Rebecca of Pittsfield, a sister Eleanor Carley of Raleigh N.C., sixteen grandchildren, thirty five great grandchildren with one baby to be, Troy Hunter, and thirty two great great grandchildren.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Joseph John Gop Sr, after 62 years of marriage, and two brothers Howard and Neil.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Mary Margaret Gop who died November 17 will be held on Friday November 23 at 11 a.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME with the Deacon Richard Magenis officiating. Family will receive friends at a calling hour preceding the funeral on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.
