Frank H. Fiedler

1918-2013 PITTSFIELD Frank H. Fiedler, 94, of 63 Cambridge Ave., passed away January 30, 2013 at his home.

Born May 31, 1918 in Springfield, the son of Herman and Margurite Fiedler, he graduated from Springfield Technical High School in June 1935. Enrolled in the GE Apprentice course in Feb 1936 and graduated as a draftsman in 1940. He worked at various assignments in both distribution and power transformer departments.

In 1953 he transferred to Bridgeport, Conn., as a supervisor of a group of draftsman doing work there for the power transformer department.

He returned to Pittsfield in 1955 and later that year was transferred to the Hickory, N.C. to serve on the project for developing automated systems for the new operation. At Hickory he was supervisor of drafting and office services. He was responsible for hiring and training personnel for his operation.

For his work on the systems team to set up the first automated plant in GE, he was given a managerial award in 1956.

He returned to Pittsfield in 1958 as a systems specialist in distribution transformers and in 1960 he transferred to the ordnance division to manage a new engineering systems group. In 1964 he was named acting manager of the ordnance systems operation. The following year he was made manager of information systems development and retired from that position in 1980 with 44 years of service.

He served the Christian Center as a trustee of the Epworth Mission and as a board member and advisor for the Christian Center since 1969. He had been a trustee of the Epworth Mission and served as both president and treasurer.

After his retirement he volunteered for the Red Cross as a driver for 26 years, RSVP, Pittsfield Beautiful Committee, and Hancock Shaker Village, First United Methodist Church, Tanglewood and the AARP Tax-Aide for the Elderly Program.

In 1983 he established the Tax-aid Program in Pittsfield and in 1984 was appointed associate district coordinator for Berkshire County which he held for 12 years. He continued as Coordinator of south county until 2003.

In 1986 he was named Territorial Senior Elfun of the year for outstanding community service.

He was a member of the Berkshire Museum Camera club for many years; he was an accomplished woodworker, building several pieces of fine furniture and clocks. A member of the Wahconah Country Club for 29 years and served as treasurer of the Dilly Boys golf group for 5 years. He received the Red Cross Community Service award in 1990 for distinguished volunteer service.

His wife Ellen Duxbury Fiedler died in 1998 after 57 years of marriage.

He leaves his daughter Barbara E. Harry and her husband Richard H. Harry of Pittsfield, son David F. Fiedler of Richmond, Ind., grandchildren Brian Harry of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Susan Wilson of Southwick, Mass., Adam Fiedler and Cory Fiedler both of Florida, great grandsons Tyce & Jason Harry and two great granddaughters Nicole & Allison Harry.

He was predeceased by his companion and close friend Lois Kelly and sisters Margurite Fielder and Alyce Lafleur.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral service for Mr. Frank H. Fiedler will be held Monday, February 4 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Pittsfield. Burial will follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. Donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or the Christian Center in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
