Richard "Bud" Race, Sr.

1923 - 2013 GREAT BARRINGTON Richard "Bud" M. Race Sr. of Quarry St., Great Barrington died Friday February 1, 2013 at Fairview Commons Nursing and Rehab.

He was born in Housatonic on January 13, 1923, son of Herbert E. and Ethel A. Sturcken Race. He attended local schools and was a 1940 graduate of the former Searles High School. During World War II he proudly served his country with the Army Air Corps as a Sergeant at Eglin Air Force Base. He worked at Warren Dolby's Nursery from 1947 to 1955 and then transferred to E.B. Dolby Florist where he worked until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement, Bud was head gardener for Chesterwood for 22 years, and was mentioned for his gardening expertise at Chesterwood in Yankee Magazine.

He was an active member of the former St. James Episcopal Church, now known as Grace Church, an Episcopal Community in the Southern Berkshires, as a Lay Minister, Senior Warden, member of the Vestry, and head of its Search Committee.

Bud leaves his wife of 60 years, the former Martha L. Tryon whom he married on October 11, 1952 at the Monterey Congregational Church; two sons, Charles E. and his partner Tim of Bremerton, WA, and Philip T. of Cape Coral, FL; one daughter, Patricia C. Race, and her wife Dawn, of Boston; one brother, Warren H. Race, of Pittsfield; his twin sister, Mildred "Sis" Anderson of Great Barrington, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bud was predeceased by his son, Richard M. Jr. and one brother, Herbert E. Race.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Richard "Bud" M. Race, Sr., who died February 1, will be held on Saturday, February 9, at 1:00 PM at the Christ Church Trinity Lutheran, in Sheffield, with the Rev. Frances Ann Hills officiating. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Bud's memory may be made to the Bud Race Garden Fund at Chesterwood or to the Grace Church Building Fund both in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington, MA. 01230.Condolences may be made through royfuneralservices.com.
