Jagat Kumari Thapa

Jagat Kumari Thapa, beloved mother of Mrs. Geeta Lipinski of Adams, passed away on March 2 in Kathmandu Nepal at age 91. She was born into a high-caste Hindu family in a remote mountain village in the western part of the kingdom of Nepal, one of eight siblings. At age 12, she was betrothed in an arranged marriage and left her parents' home to live with her future in-laws. She was a devoted mother and wife to her family, as her husband worked directly for the King at various posts throughout the country.

She was predeceased by her husband of 75 years, one son and six sisters.

She leaves one younger brother who was also her closest neighbor, three sons, Tika and his wife Tara from Arizona, Raam and his wife Maria from Germany, Shyam from Switzerland; four daughters, Usha from Nepal, Geeta and her husband David Lipinski from Adams, MA, Bunu and her husband Dr. Etchasons from Indiana, and Baba with her husband Jeff from Michigan. She also leaves eight grandchildren, including Joshua and Pranam Lipinski from Adams, eight great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild from Nepal.

In the latter part of her life, she successfully managed many business affairs, including property management and lending start-up capital to many entrepreneurial ventures, and was often admired by her community for her sharp wit, determination and leadership.

As is the custom in Hindu Nepal, her body will be cremated in a religious ritual performed by Brahmin priests on a funeral pyre along the banks of the sacred Bagmati River at Pashupati temple in Kathmandu. Her ashes will flow southward to the Ganges River, thence into the Indian Ocean.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
