Geraldine N. Kielman Binder
1926 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Geraldine Norma Gillon Kielman Binder, 87, of 81 Dartmouth St., passed away peacefully on March 28, 2013 at Providence Care Center of Lenox.
Gerry was born on Feb. 15, 1926, in Southbridge, the daughter of Edmund V. Gillon, Sr. and Ethel H. McLaughlin Gillon. She graduated from the former Mary E. Wells High School in Southbridge in 1943 and from The University of New Hampshire in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.
She married her first husband, John Crawford Kielman, in 1947. Mr. Kielman passed away in 2005. Gerry married her second husband, Frederick A. Binder, in 1967, and they were married for 39 years. Mr. Binder passed away in 2006.
She spent most of her adult life in Pittsfield and was an active member of her church and the community.
She and her husband, Fred, were long-time members of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsfield. Gerry served as editor of the newsletter and served on numerous committees. She was an active member and officer of United Methodist Women and also an officer of Church Women United. In January of 2002, Gerry was honored with the Church Women United Valiant Woman Award.
For many years Mrs. Binder was a member of the Christian Center Auxiliary, having served most recently as Chaplin. She was also a long-time member of PEO Chapter V. As a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, she began her service at Girls, Inc., where she was the first helper in the Day Care for the Elderly program. She continued her volunteer work with R.S.V.P. at Springside Nursing Facility.
Mrs. Binder and her husband, Fred, were also active in the Barnstormers Men's Chorus. Gerry loved poetry and wrote many poems throughout her life, many dealing with the joy she felt for her family, for Nature and her beloved Cape Cod. In 2010, with the assistance of her daughter Jess, she published her collection of poetry entitled, "Crossing the Bridge."
Mrs. Binder is survived by her sister, Betty Moodie, and her husband, Jack, of East Longmeadow; by her sister-in-law Priscilla Gillon of Coventry, Conn.
She is survived by her son, Richard Crawford Kielman, and his three daughters, Lisa Desiata and her husband, Michael, and their sons, Michael, Nicholas, and Andrew; Courtney Lynn Kielman; and Kelsey Marie Kielman. She is also survived by her daughter, Jess Kielman, her life partner, Gayle Andrew, and their children, Rebecca Dickerson, and her husband, Glenn, and their son, Noah; and Devin Andrew.
Also surviving are four children from her second marriage, Gerry's daughter, Betsy S. Binder Koch, and her husband, Douglas of Sebastian, Fla., and their children, Dawn Fronduto and her children, Morgan and Cody; Dana Burnham and her son, Kyle; Diane Black and her husband, Patrick, and their sons, Colin, Cooper, and Cole; and Debbie Koch. Gerry's daughter, Nancy M. Binder Powers, and her husband, Dr. Gerald Powers of Bloomsburg, Pa., and their children, Beth Costello, and her husband, Matthew; Francis Powers and his wife, Andrea, and their daughters Katie Mae, Ava, and Elizabeth; Mary, and her husband, Jim, and their children, Jocelyn and Cameron. Gerry's two sons, John F. Binder and Thomas A. Binder, both of Pittsfield.
Also included as cherished family members are Bob and Cherie Ericson of Lanesboro and their children, Ryan and Marissa and also Sandra Hackman Wilson of Pittsfield. Mrs. Binder is also survived by numerous and much loved nieces and nephews and all of their children.
Two brothers predeceased her, Leonard N. Gillon and Edmund V. Gillon Jr.
FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be no funeral or calling hours. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at a future date. It is the request of Mrs. Binder that no flowers be sent, but rather contributions be made to United Methodist Women in care of the First United Methodist Church, 55 Fenn Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201
The family would like to express its gratitude to the administration and staff of Providence Care Center of Lenox for the compassion and love shown to Gerry in the final months of her life.
