1921 - 2013 WILLIAMSTOWN Daniel Eldridge Galusha died at Williamstown Commons on April 14, 2013.
He was born on March 10, 1921, son of Kate M. Eldridge Galusha and Daniel Jones Galusha. A Williamstown resident and graduate of Williamstown High School, class of 1939, he attended Iowa State College.
He received his pilot's license to join the Air Force; however, due labor shortages, Daniel returned to Williamstown to run the family farm.
Daniel continued to enjoy flying his own plane as a hobby.
On January 30, 1949, Daniel married Mary Lou DeMayo. They had three sons, James Eldridge, John Daniel, and William Louis.
Fairfield Farms had a large retail milk business, started by his father, Daniel J. Galusha, over 100 years ago, as part of his rural mail delivery. The retail business was sold in the early 1960's and the farm continued to operate, milking cows and raising crops. Fairfield Farms also planted and sold Christmas trees as a side business to the dairy farm for many years.
Fairfield Dairy has been a model conservation farm throughout the years. Dan was an ardent conservationist and a former chairman of the Berkshire Conservation District for over 40 years. When he retired from the board, he continued on in an advisory position.
Aside from working the land on his farm, Dan was an accomplished woodworker, building everything from his cabin to dollhouses for his granddaughters.
Daniel was also a board member of Eastern States Farmer's Exchange, which then became Agway. He was a member of the First Congregational Church.
His survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; his son, James Eldridge and his wife, Jacqueline Galusha; his son John Daniel Galusha and his companion, Jamie Bairstow; his son, William Louis and his wife, Kelly Galusha: his five grandchildren, Kathryn, Ryan, and Andrew Galusha; Daniel Jay Galusha; and Sarah Galusha and her husband, Dr. Matt Chinman: his five great-grandchildren,Lauren, James, and Cassie Galusha, and Luke and Nate Chinman.
FUNERAL NOTICE: At his request, there will be no calling hours. A Memorial service at First Congregational Church, Williamstown, will be Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 11 a.m.
