1925 - 2013 SOUTH EGREMONT Arthur Armstrong, 88, a longtime resident of Undermountain Road, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Geer Nursing Center in Canaan, Conn.
Born Feb. 28, 1925, in Mount Kisco, N.Y., he was the son of Francis and Margaret Kennedy Armstrong. He was a graduate of Glen Cove High School and Union College.
Arthur began working as a dairy farmer as a child with his family on Armstrong Dairy in Locust Valley, N.Y., until 1963, when he moved and began his own farm in South Egremont.
His farming career was put on hold from 1943 - 1945 when he enlisted in the US Naval Aviation V-5 Program.
Although his dairy farm stopped operation in the early 80's he continued in the field as a Peace Corps volunteer in Belize with his late wife, Cecelia, working on the Macal Dairy Project (85-86) and as a technical consultant in Russia for the Ministry of Agriculture. Later in his life, he worked with David Smith, Jr. at his Sears store in Great Barrington, assembling and delivering equipment and appliances.
He was actively involved in the Berkshire School theater program with his former companion, Irene MacDonald, until her death in 2006.
Arthur loved to travel, make stained glass art and birds. He was a member of the Sheffield Kiwanis Club, as well as a longtime fan of the Mt. Everett wrestling team.
Arthur is survived by his daughters, Barbara Viglione of Northford, Conn., and Cindy Plantz and her husband, Jim, of Cassopolis, Mich.; his brothers, Frank (and his wife Elsie) and Edward Armstrong of Locust Valley, N.Y.; his stepchildren, Susan Morris of Pittsfield, Karen Pascucci of Coram, N.Y., and Stephen Morris of Richmond, N.H.; his grandchildren, Brianna and Stephen Viglione, and Amelia and Jeremy Wolfe; his longtime friend, David Smith, Jr. of Sheffield, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Cecelia Wise, in 1987.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The family of Arthur Armstrong will receive friends Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 3 to 6 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. A brief service will follow at 6 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Anne E. Ryder.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 20, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Town House Hill Cemetery, Town House Hill Road in Egremont.
