Bernice Laurel Duperault Bergeron
1917-2013 NORTH ADAMS Bernice Laurel Duperault Bergeron, 95, of 187 Wells Ave. North Adams, died Wednesday July 10, 2013 at North Adams Commons.
She was born in Readsboro, Vt., on November 30, 1917, theseventh of eleven children born to Joseph and Sophie (Loiselle) Duperault. She attended schools in Vermont.
Bernice was married to Alfred Francis Bergeron on October 11, 1952. Alfred died on October 11, 1986.
Prior to her marriage she proudly worked in several factories in Vermont and Massachusetts, including the Readsboro Chair Factory, the Deerfield Glassine Co. and Sprague Electric Co. She served for a short time as a part of the Women's Auxiliary Corps during World War II and for a few years as the switchboard operator for the Telephone Company in Readsboro. Later in life Bernice was a fixture for years in the Berkshire Bookstore in downtown North Adams; a position she loved and would have continued to work well into her 80's if the store had not closed. Bernice excelled as a seamstress having taught herself out of necessity of her youth. Her family has many poignant memories of festive occasions made more special with her creative contributions. A strong, independent, capable member of the "greatest generation", Bernice was never daunted by any task. Carpentry, upholstery, canning, quilting, camping, wallpapering, and more, all challenges were met with gusto. Her children and grandchildren will remember Bernice as a storyteller in the old tradition. She brought the past alive for them with anecdotes, songs, poems and loving; and sometimes hilarious memories of the people, places, and experiences that populated her life.
Her children, Mary Jo Mancuso and her husband Michael, of Norfolk, Mass., Kathryn Tessier and her husband, Bill of North Adams, Jayne Bergeron of Adams and Al Bergeron Jr. and his wife Barbara of Chester Springs, Pa., will miss her very much. And she will be forever remembered by Jason, Damian, Briana, Joseph, Aubry Laurel and Nicholas, the six grandchildren she loved so dearly. She cherished her great-grandchildren, Paityn Laurel, Logan and Aiden.
She also leaves many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and numerous cousins. She was pre-deceased by her three brothers and seven sisters.
