Obituary Condolences

John Edward Curtin

1935-2013 PITTSFIELD John Curtin of Troy, N.Y., and Harwich, Mass. left this world on July 16, 2013, after a valiant fight against cancer.

He was born on July 19, 1935 in Pittsfield to James E. Curtin and Anna Mae Burke Naughton Curtin. After graduating from Pittsfield High School, he attended The College of the Holy Cross, graduating in 1956. He later earned his Masters in Public Administration from the State University of Albany in 1971.

He proudly served in the United States Navy, serving in Key West, Nantucket and Newfoundland. Upon completing his service, he returned to this job at the New York State Department of Health, where he commenced a four decade career in public service. In addition to the Department of Health, John worked with Civil Service, Social Service, the Executive Chamber in various capacities; the Office of Planning Coordinator, Social Development Planning Commission, Manpower Resources Commission, and the Governing Secretariat for Manpower Planning. He finished his career in public service working in the New York State Labor Department, retiring in 1995.

John was very active in his community and his Catholic faith. He served as a lector and Eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart Church in Troy, N.Y. as well as serving as a board memeber and chairperson on the board of Catholic Central High School in Troy, as well as a member of the CCHS Monsignor Burns Annual Fund. John was a Fellow on the State Academy for Public Administration. He volunteered with the New York State Theater Institute, and the Executive Service Corps of Tri-Cities. He also served as a class agent for his alma mater, Holy Cross, as well as acting as an Admissions Office Interviewer for prospective students.

His most cherished role was being the best friend and devoted husband to Judith Ann (Judy) Joyce Curtin for 56 happy years. He was the extremely proud father to Mary K. (Kate) Curtin Malone (Bob) of Westford, Mass., Susan M. Curtin (Peter Miller) of Wakefield, Mass., John E. Curtin Jr. (Kathleen) of East Greenbush, N.Y., Robert B. Curtin (Laura) of Averill Park, N.Y., Michael P. Curtin (Nancy) of Strafford, N.H. and William D. Curtin (Suzanne) of Lumberton, N.J.

The only group he was prouder of than his children were his 21 grandchildren, and it is a mutual admiration society. "Papa John" was beloved by Laura Malone and her husband Scott Sawyer, Susan Rita, Theresa and Patrick Malone; Frank, David, Timothy and Katie Miller; John, Jimmy, Matthew and Andrew Curtin; Colleen, Brian and Kevin Curtin; Megan, Sarah and Lauren Curtin; and Leah, Billy and Tommy Curtin. He was happiest spending time with them or telling anyone who was around of their latest exploits.
