Gary A. Stone

1953 - 2013 MALBORO Gary A. Stone, 59, formerly of Medford, passed away in Marlboro on Friday, July 19, 2013, after a long period of poor health.

Son of the late Everett and Phyllis Stone of Williamstown, Gary was born Nov. 3, 1953, with a severe form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which confined him to a wheelchair for his whole life. Given only months to live at birth, Gary defied the medical experts of the day and led a rich and full life, graduating first from the Massachusetts Hospital School (MHS) where he earned the nickname "Mouse" and later from Mass Bay Community College in the late 1970's with a Computer Science degree.

Gary worked as a programmer and IT administrator for a number of companies in the Boston area, including Houghton-Mifflin and Raytheon.

Those who knew Gary will recall his love of books, a wide variety of music, and movies, frequently sharing his latest discoveries with family and friends.

In his younger years, Gary was an accomplished wheelchair athlete, competing in multiple track and field events, including shot put, discus and racing on the international stage, earning numerous medals and trophies in what would later become known as the Paralympics. Gary was also a bowler and basketball player and life-long fan of the Boston Celtics.

In addition, he leaves a legacy of deep Christian faith and was active in both his church, the Paulist Center of Boston, and the MHS alumni association.

Gary leaves behind a brother, Ronald Stone of Brattleboro, Vt.; three sisters, Brenda Carroll of Oxford, Sheree Saunders of Rochester, N.H., and Marilee Swindell of Temple, N.H., and numerous nieces and nephews.
