Mary V. Flynn

1919-2013 Mary V. Flynn, 93, Teacher, Stockbridge Selectman, and Museum Director died on July 19th at her home on Shamrock Street in Stockbridge where she lived all her life.

Miss Flynn, the daughter of Michael and Ida Mall Flynn, was born on December 15, 1919.

She was a lifelong communicant of St Joseph Church and of the Marian Shrine, both in Stockbridge.

Miss Flynn graduated from Stockbridge's Williams High School in 1936, received her bachelor's and master's degrees from North Adams State Teacher's College as well as fellowships from Williams College and Yale University.

She was a teacher for 38 years, a member of the Massachusetts and National Teachers Associations and president of both the Berkshire County Teachers' and Retired Teachers' Associations.

Miss Flynn's political career began in 1932 when, at the age of twelve, she campaigned for FDR. A lifelong Democrat, she was twice a guest at the White House during the Carter and Clinton administrations.

On the local level Miss Flynn was the first woman to serve as chair of the Town Democratic Committee, the first director of the Chesterwood Museum, and the first woman to serve on the Stockbridge Board of Selectmen (1978 - 1993).

Miss Flynn received many state and local awards and citations as well as being honored with an oak tree and granite bench at Gould Meadows and the Mary V. Flynn trail along the Housatonic River.

Mary Flynn was predeceased by her brother William John Flynn. She is survived by her neighbors and cousins William and JoAnne Farry Provost, and Flynn and Farry cousins in Pittsfield, former students, and many special friends. She asks that she be remembered in their prayers. She is thankful to God for her many blessings in life and for her beautiful town of Stockbridge.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will for Mary Flynn will be on Friday, July 26th at 10:00 am at St. Joseph's Church on Elm Street in Stockbridge. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery also in Stockbridge followed by a gathering of friends on the west porch (Piazza) of the Red Lion Inn. Visiting hours will be Thursday evening from 4-7 pm at the Kelly Funeral Home in Lee.

A memorial gathering will also be held on Sunday July 28th from 3-5 pm in front of the Old Stockbridge Town Hall on Main Street for a sharing of remembrances, among Mary's many friends, colleagues and students.
