Robert MacKenzie Obituary
Robert Edmund MacKenzie

1930-2013 NEW MARLBOROUGH Robert Edmund MacKenzie, 83, of Adsit Crosby Road in New Marlborough passed away November 13, 2013 at his home surrounded by loving family. Born April 14, 1930 in Holyoke, MA he was the son of Alexander and Agnes Kane MacKenzie. He graduated from Holyoke High School in 1948, joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1949. He then went on and graduated from the University of Massachusetts, class of 1951. Bob worked for High lawn Farm, Suters (Eggenberger) Farm and the Brewer Farm before achieving his dream of owning his own farm. He bought Spruce Hill Farm on Adsit Crosby Road in 1956 where he lived until his death. Bob had a rewarding career at The Animal Medical Center in New York City for 30 years before retiring as administrator in 1995. During the time he worked there it was considered the largest Animal Hospital in the world, sometimes treating exotic animals. He came home with many interesting stories. A train enthusiast, Bob had an extensive model train collection at his home, including a beautiful outdoor train garden with fish pond and flowering trees. In later years he could often be seen riding his lawnmower even though he was legally blind. Bob is survived by his two sons Robert P. MacKenzie of Leadville, CO and Scott MacKenzie and his companion Scottie Mills of New Marlborough, MA, two daughters Gail MacKenzie and her husband Dana Miller of Stow, MA and Kathleen Loring and her husband Charles of New Marlborough, along with three grandchildren: MacKenzie and Michaela Loring and Brody Miller. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Nell Northwood MacKenzie, who died on August 19, 2013. The couple was married on February 10, 1951 in Worthington, MA. He was also predeceased by his brother Alexander. In accordance with his wishes services will be private at a later date. Donations in Robert's memory may be made to either HospiceCare in the Berkshires or Meals on Wheels through FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
